Rick GriffinRick Griffin is a LEGEND in poster art and is a big reason why I got into the illustrator, Graphics side of art. When he was a teenager in the 50's, just like every other kid in California he was surfing and when he was 16 he came up with a surfing character called Murphy which appeared in many surf magazines. 
This is the character Murphy.
Rick was illustrating posters for all of the top bands and musicians of the 60's and 70's like Hendrix and The Who. His talent as an artist was awesome and his posters are some of my favourite pieces of art because of the colour the skill of drawing but especially the typography. His lettering was so far ahead of its time and he created the Psychedelic style poster.
